Thinking big

Posted February 17, 2011

I was once a spectator at a young kids’ football match. The goalkeeper was a lot smaller than his team mates and half-way through the match he was faced with a penalty kick. As he prepared himself for the (unlikely!) save, his mother hollered, “Make yourself BIG, Andy”.

Andy looked dubiously at his mum but I could see he was willing to give it a go. Needless to say, he failed to accomplish this task and the ball whizzed past the top of his head and landed in the net.

Now Cameron is asking us all to become BIG. And if we really focus on this then together we’ll form a Big Society. I know he’s referring to taking civic responsibility and, in principle, I believe that this is a good thing. But are we magically expected to stretch and expand to fill the void left by the budget deficit?

The image of a diminutive Andy looking like a small scale model in the goalmouth keeps springing to mind. I think we all feel a bit like Andy: we have the will to succeed but not the means.
