The Village: Total Recall

Posted December 31, 2009

On my first visit to my local bakery, I was pleasantly surprised when the assistant stepped forward to introduce herself and warmly shook me by the hand. She politely asked for my name in return and welcomed me to the village. I left the shop clutching my freshly baked high-top granary loaf, suddenly feeling less of an outsider.

On my second visit the following week I was greeted with, “Good morning Karen, nice to see you, what can I get you today?”  As someone who can’t remember the birthdays of her siblings or even the date of her own wedding anniversary, I was astounded. I’ve since observed Kerry with other customers and I now realise that she has an almost encyclopaedic recall of not just mine but everybody’s name. Perhaps some special memory enhancing ingredient is added to the bread mix?
