Cold weather style

Winds from the Urals will sweep across Europe this week bringing with them an icy blast. Very Dr Zhivago.

An image of a glamorous Julie Christie (she plays Lara in the iconic film) springs to mind. Swathed in sable fur, with her diamond bright Husky-blue eyes and flawless, creamy complexion, she’s a vision of loveliness despite the extreme chill.

My cold weather look is more Fargo than Dr Zhivago. Wrapped in a puffa jacket (a look that instantly adds pounds), my eyes stream the moment the wind hits them and my face turns a blotchy red. The colder it gets, the greater the visual effect.

Once on a visit to New York, I took a boat trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island. It was mid-December and I’ve never experienced such a bitter, dry cold. As soon as I reached the island (how come the cold never left Julie Christie busting for a pee?) I hurried straight to the ladies toilets, not helped by the fact that my jaw was so frozen I couldn’t ask directions.

As soon as I stepped into the warmth my face began to tingle, then grow hot … and hotter still, until it felt as if it was on fire. I checked myself out in the mirror. Holy crap! I looked like a rabbit that had just been skinned. There’s an expression I used to hear a lot in Ireland - ‘so cold it would flay you’. I feared that I really had been flayed.

I remained in the ladies toilets, staring in alarm at my reflection and wondering what the hell I was going to do. Thankfully, after about ten minutes, the redness faded. As I dabbed Vaseline on my chapped lips and pulled my fake fur hat down tight over my ears, ready to venture outside again, I couldn’t help thinking that even Julie Christie would be hard pushed to look elegant on a New York ferry in Winter.
